Grandma’s Recipe: Homemade Ketchup

The statement that “youth is wasted on the young” is exemplified in my life by homemade ketchup ( and in many other ways).  I so did not appreciate my mom toiling for hours making ketchup when all I wanted was the thick stuff that came out (with some encouragement) of glass bottles.

I remember liking the flavor, but not wanting to admit it or eat it. Watching people slather it on homemade bread and was a crime in my eyes (okay, I am still not sure about putting it on homemade bread…”store bought” is another story).

Lately, I have thought a lot about my grandmother’s/mom’s ketchup. Family members have been asking if I had the recipe that my grandmother made. Well, I have finally found a recipe my grandmother had for ketchup…it sounds like the ketchup I remember my mom making…but I can not say for certain it is THE recipe. I do not have the tomatoes to try and make the recipe to be more certain…but I think that this is the recipe my maternal grandmother used to make ketchup.
