I Heart Vanilla

I love the flavor of vanilla. I love the smell of vanilla. I love vanilla.

I use several types of vanilla.

For most items, I use Nielsen-Massey Vanilla Extract. I love the flavor. I usually buy mine from World Market.

I also use Watkins Clear Double Strength Vanilla. I like Watkins in part it is the only thing that my mom liked to use. The clear is great in items you do not want discolored by the vanilla.

My newest addition is vanilla powder. It is great to add to items like coffee and fruit. Sometimes what is sold as vanilla powder is vanilla flavored confectioner’s sugar, so you need to watch. Pure vanilla powder is just ground vanilla beans. It does not contain alcohol, thus its flavor does not evaporate any. You can substitute it for the extract in the same amounts. This would also be good to buy if using an alcohol in food is a problem.

I did find an article on JoyofBaking.com that said to watch buying Mexican vanilla because some of the processors added a coumarin that is known to cause liver and kidney damage. Although, that substance is banned by the FDA, you need to be vigilant.
