Snow Cream or Snow Ice Cream

While growing up in the Mid-Ohio Valley, I heard my mother tell of making ice cream out of snow (snow cream) when she was a child in rural West Virginia far from any industries. It was never something that she (or I) ever considered doing in our city or farm homes closer to the manufacturing facilities along the Ohio River. Although we had lots of snow over the years, I knew of no one that made snow cream…no one.

Thus, it came as quite the surprise to move to an area with relatively very little snow and find so many people talk about making snow cream every time the forecast called for snow. Apparently, it is more of a southern thing?

Last night, as the snow really started accumulating here, my Facebook news feed was full of people talking about making snow cream and many even included pictures. So, today I had to give it a try myself.

I based my attempt on a Paula Deen recipe that I found on the Food Network site…yes, I was surprised to find anything Paula Deen on the Food Network site too. Afterall, Savannah is known to get so much snow 😉 that I figured it had to be good, LOL. Seriously, it seemed the easiest and was highly rated.

It was really good. The condensed milk made it very sweet. I added a lot of vanilla extract and it reminded me of my mom’s ice cream fresh from my parent’s White Mountain freezer.
