Orange Cream Gelatin Dessert

Orange Cream Gelatin Dessert is an easy dessert that you can make from a few items in the pantry and freezer at any time of the year. It works well for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mother's Day, bridal or baby showers, etc. It is sweet and rich, yet somehow also seems light and refreshing. It is a rather nostalgic dessert as it reminds me a little of an orange push-up ice cream treat from my childhood. Plus, it is a molded gelatin dessert, which always reminds me of the past. Sloppy Joe Sandwiches

I am not sure if my tastes changed or the Sloppy Joe sauce in a can changed, but I stopped liking it several years ago. I decided to just make my own from scratch. After making them the first time, I wondered why I ever used the canned stuff. Sloppy Joes are simple to make from scratch and they taste good.

You may notice that my recipe does reflect my current obsession with interest in turmeric. Although I think the flavor it adds is very subtle, it can be omitted if you are not a fan or do not have any.


 

Recipe: Sloppy Joe Sandwiches

Ingredients

  1. 1 lb. lean ground beef or turkey
  2. dash olive oil
  3. 1 sm. onion, minced
  4. 1/2 sweet pepper, chopped
  5. 1/2 tsp. salt or to taste
  6. 1/2 c. ketchup
  7. 2 Tbsp. tomato paste + 1/2 c. water OR 4 oz. tomato puree or sauce
  8. 1/2 tsp. paprika
  9. 1/2 tsp. turmeric
  10. 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  11. 1/4 tsp. chili powder
  12. 2 tsp. cider vinegar
  13. 1/4 c. brown sugar or to taste

Instructions

  1. Brown ground meat in a large skillet until cooked through.
  2. While meat is cooking, add just a dash of olive oil to a clear an area in the same skillet to cook onions and peppers until onions are translucent and peppers are tender.
  3. Mix meat, onions and peppers together.
  4. Add salt to taste.
  5. Add ketchup, tomato paste and water or tomato sauce, paprika, turmeric, garlic, and chili powder.
  6. Stir until mixed well.
  7. Add vinegar and sugar to taste.
  8. Cook for a few minutes longer.
  9. Taste for seasoning.
  10. Serve warm on buns.

Notes

Try topping with relish, pickles,coleslaw, fried onions, potato chips or Fritos
