Orange Cream Gelatin Dessert is an easy dessert that you can make from a few items in the pantry and freezer at any time of the year. It works well for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mother's Day, bridal or baby showers, etc. It is sweet and rich, yet somehow also seems light and refreshing. It is a rather nostalgic dessert as it reminds me a little of an orange push-up ice cream treat from my childhood. Plus, it is a molded gelatin dessert, which always reminds me of the past. As with other gelatin and fruit dishes, someone might call this a "Jello salad" in the United States. However, this recipe uses an entire quart of orange sherbert in addition to gelatin, so I can not bring myself … Continue Reading about Orange Cream Gelatin Dessert

Simple Pasta Salad
A wonderful side dish for any cookout, picnic, or barbecue (or any meal if you like it as much as I do) is pasta salad. It is an easy, versatile dish that can be made well in advance. You can use your favorite type of pasta and vegetables to make it the way you like […]

Herb Roasted Leg of Lamb
I had it all planned out. I would roast a boneless leg of lamb stuffed with a herb mixture for an Easter treat. My husband would be grateful to have something other than ham (which he does not really like) and there would be leftovers galore. I had to search for the recipe I wanted […]

Bacon Wrapped Aspargus
I was not a fan of asparagus until, as an adult, my little sister coaxed me into trying it grilled…yum! Since then, I really like it grilled or oven roasted with a little olive oil and a dash of salt. Although I was totally satisfied always preparing it the same way, I did notice how […]

Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes (with or without ham)
I always want to make scalloped potatoes the day after we have a ham dinner. I think it is because it is what my mom usually did. My mom made wonderful scalloped potatoes. As she taught us how to make it without ever referencing a recipe, I have done my best to construct a recipe. […]

Retro Food: Veggie Jell-O Salads
My maternal grandmother made Jell-O salads for every holiday meal. I think she may have started serving a couple of them as a way to get my father to eat his veggies 🙂 Easter always meant carrot and pineapple Jell-O salad. However, I think it may have been her favorite as she fixed it […]

Carrot Cake or Bars
In the Amish Country in Ohio there used to be a little bakery is a small town that sold the best doughnuts, cakes, and bars. It was one of the places we always stopped when I took my parents to the area. I even knew of people who drove more than two hours just to […]

Swiss Chard With Bacon
Several years ago, we grew Swiss Chard in our garden. It was fantastic fresh out of the garden and simply prepared. Since then, I have purchased it at the store occasionally. Although it is good, it is not as good as eating it fresh from the garden. I decided to change up the way I […]

How to Hard Boil an Egg
Although it seems like a fundamentally easy task, boiling an egg can result in yellow yolks acquiring a green/gray outer coating. These are not the most appetizing nor do they make the best looking deviled eggs. The question is can it be avoided? The answer is yes. It is actually fairly easy to consistently have […]

Classic Creamy Coleslaw
Creamy coleslaw ( or cole slaw) is a great side item with salmon or other fish, ham, barbecue, and hamburgers. I also think it is a must-have topping for hot dogs and pulled-pork barbecue sandwiches. The taste and texture of the coleslaw is influenced by the type of dressing and the cut of the […]

Fresh Lemonade
Although it is still spring, it is a HOT day here. I decided to make some fresh squeezed lemonade for my family as a treat after working in the yard. This is not a family recipe that I am passing on. My father used to only want the frozen kind of lemonade, so my mom […]
