Orange Cream Gelatin Dessert is an easy dessert that you can make from a few items in the pantry and freezer at any time of the year. It works well for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mother's Day, bridal or baby showers, etc. It is sweet and rich, yet somehow also seems light and refreshing. It is a rather nostalgic dessert as it reminds me a little of an orange push-up ice cream treat from my childhood. Plus, it is a molded gelatin dessert, which always reminds me of the past. As with other gelatin and fruit dishes, someone might call this a "Jello salad" in the United States. However, this recipe uses an entire quart of orange sherbert in addition to gelatin, so I can not bring myself … Continue Reading about Orange Cream Gelatin Dessert

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream in Nashville
After a long, stressful day at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, I promised my daughter she could have some ice cream as a reward for her good behavior. After some quick research on Urbanspoon, we headed to East Nashville to the highly rated Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream shop. Jeni’s was a bright, clean, modern business with a […]

Back to Cuba Cafe
South of downtown Nashville, near the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere, is a little piece of Cuba. The Back to Cuba Cafe may not be much to look at from the outside, but you should not judge this book by its cover. Inside, the cafe is clean and reflective of the Cuban cuisine. There is a […]

The Varsity Near Atlanta
The landmark drive-in institution that is The Varsity in Atlanta has been well documented in television shows, magazines, other blogs, etc. So, why am I also writing about it? Well, I am not exactly writing about the “World’s Largest Drive-In.” I am writing about one of is other locations…yes, there are multiple locations of this […]

Hattie B’s Hot Chicken in Nashville, TN
Crunchy, moist, delicious, and fried to perfection…that is my best description of the Southern chicken from Hattie B’s Hot Chicken. I think it was the best fried chicken I have ever eaten. Nashville is known for a local specialty, Hot Fried Chicken…spicy hot. Some of the hot chicken places only offer varying degrees of heat…no […]

Ovalle’s Mexican Cafe in Chattanooga
UPDATE: OVALLE’S HAS PERMANENTLY CLOSED. THE LOCATION IS NOW THE MOCCASIN BEND BREWING COMPANY. There are many places in Chattanooga, Tennessee to eat Mexican food. A few of them are very good and even serve purportedly authentic dishes; however, Ovalle’s Mexican Cafe stands apart from the crowd in a very good way. Ovalle’s is not […]

First Watch is First Choice for Breakfast
Okay, I am very partial to local, “mom-and-pop” owned restaurants. However, on rare occasion, a chain or franchised restaurant just gets it right. First Watch is one of those rare gems. Although franchised with more than 100 locations, First Watch does not seem to be a typical chain. First, they are only open for breakfast […]

Mojo Burrito in Chattanooga, Tennessee
Mojo Burrito is a local Tex-Mex restaurant with three locations in the Chattanooga, Tennessee area. Mojo Burrito is akin to the chains like Chipotle and Moe’s Southwest Grill, but much better, in my opinion. The St. Elmo neighborhood location is my favorite. It’s quirky decor is furthered by the addition of a rotating line of […]

GollyWhoppers in Chattanooga
UPDATE: GOLLYWHOPPERS PERMANENTLY CLOSED. A FORMER MANAGER HAS OPENED A SANDWICH SHOP IN THE SAME LOCATION. IT IS CALLED GREG’S. GollyWhoppers is a local sandwich shop in a small shopping center on East Brainerd Avenue in Chattanooga, Tennessee serving good food at good prices. There sandwiches are on fresh bread and rather large. This is […]

Mitchell Deli in Nashville
After only one trip to Mitchell Delicatessen in East Nashville, TN I am hooked. There are so many things to like about it that I hardly know where to begin. This place is not exactly on the tourist beaten path, which I think is a very good thing. It seems to emphasize quality and local […]

Gladys Knight and Ron Winans’ Chicken and Waffles
I must admit that the records and glossy photos on the walls greeting us as we entered Gladys Knight and Ron Winans’ Chicken and Waffles in Lithonia, Georgia did not help my skepticism about eating at a restaurant owned by and named after two music icons. My fear was that it would yet be another […]
