Orange Cream Gelatin Dessert is an easy dessert that you can make from a few items in the pantry and freezer at any time of the year. It works well for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mother's Day, bridal or baby showers, etc. It is sweet and rich, yet somehow also seems light and refreshing. It is a rather nostalgic dessert as it reminds me a little of an orange push-up ice cream treat from my childhood. Plus, it is a molded gelatin dessert, which always reminds me of the past. As with other gelatin and fruit dishes, someone might call this a "Jello salad" in the United States. However, this recipe uses an entire quart of orange sherbert in addition to gelatin, so I can not bring myself … Continue Reading about Orange Cream Gelatin Dessert

Eldelwiess in Virginia
Eldelwiess restaurant was a pleasant surprise for me. The location near Saunton, Virginia just off of Interstate I-81 was not an area that I put much faith into finding good German cuisine. I was SO wrong.
We enjoyed our meal on the first Sunday we stopped as we traveled through the area so much that we stopped the next Sunday on our return home as well!
Despite being so close to the Interstate, the place was filled with locals after church. The locals and those passing through really seemed to enjoy the guitarist/singer on our first visit.
We loved the log cabin atmosphere, the friendly service, and the delicious food.
They served family-style sides that were the same for all the entrees: red cabbage, spaetzle, Bavarian cabbage, and green beans.
My favorite entree was the Schweineroulade. It was a pork roulade stuffed with an herbal stuffing and pickle and served with a sour cream sauce and Bavarian dumplings. (I must admit I am not a big fan of Bavarian dumplings). It was SO GOOD. I had the Sauerbraten and my husband had the Wiener Schnitzel on our first visit.

My daughter liked the fried fish so much that she ordered it both times.

However, the favorite dish of both my daughter and myself was the rice pudding. It is the only time I have ever encountered a rice pudding similar to my mom’s rice pudding in any restaurant. My mom’s rice pudding was a lemon rice pudding and this rice pudding was not lemon. However, it was delicious. It brought me to tears.

If you like German cuisine, I highly recommend giving Eldelwiess a try the next time you are passing through the Staunton, VA area.
