Orange Cream Gelatin Dessert is an easy dessert that you can make from a few items in the pantry and freezer at any time of the year. It works well for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mother's Day, bridal or baby showers, etc. It is sweet and rich, yet somehow also seems light and refreshing. It is a rather nostalgic dessert as it reminds me a little of an orange push-up ice cream treat from my childhood. Plus, it is a molded gelatin dessert, which always reminds me of the past. As with other gelatin and fruit dishes, someone might call this a "Jello salad" in the United States. However, this recipe uses an entire quart of orange sherbert in addition to gelatin, so I can not bring myself … Continue Reading about Orange Cream Gelatin Dessert

Delicious Baked Oatmeal
When reading my new cookbook, 55 Years and Still Cookin’: Lehman’s Anniversary Cookbook, I noticed six recipes for baked oatmeal. Although we had never even heard of baked oatmeal, my husband suggested we give it a try. I figure an item must be good if it has multiple recipes in a compilation cookbook. It was […]

Old-Fashioned Hot Cocoa with Homemade Marshmallows
I remember hearing Martha Stewart tell her viewers more than once that they had to make their own marshmallows. She said they were much better than store bought marshmallows. When I heard her, I would never have believed that I would actually make my own marshmallows. Lately, I started thinking about how much my daughter […]

Hearty Soup Beans and Dumplings
Tonight, I made soup beans for dinner. No, I have not made a mistake when I say soup beans. I do not mean bean soup; I mean soup beans. I am from Appalachia where soup beans are not the same thing as bean soup. Bean soup usually contains things like celery and has a more […]

Simply Sauteed Squash
Usually, we do not eat zucchini and yellow squash during the winter as they are not in season. This year though, one of our local grocery stores is getting in a great looking crop from Florida. Plus, they are really inexpensive compared to the typical summer prices, thus I could not resist. My mom frequently would […]

Spaetzle
My husband had to travel to Germany for business a few months ago. He went to a plant that made stainless steel kitchen products. He brought me back a Spaetzle maker. This particular Spaetzle maker is very easy to use. You just press the loose dough through the holes using the plastic scraper. There are […]

Cooked Cabbage with Bacon
Growing up, our neighbor, Gussie, was a grandmother figure who could really cook. When her husband was alive, she would make several roast chickens on Sundays and he would distribute them to the “older” people who were shut in. She loved to cook for other people. We were lucky enough to be frequent recipients of […]

Rosemary Pork Loin Roast
Today I have a guest chef, my husband. It is New Year’s Day and I am sick, thus he volunteered to cook. 🙂 I am very grateful. He did ask me how to fix everything, but he did a great job. I once made this roast recipe for some friends and now it is what […]

Cream Puff Fillings
I have told how to make the cream puffs, but you need to put a filling inside of them to make them tasty. The filling possibilities fall into two categories, savory or sweet. Savory fillings in small cream puffs make very good appetizers or light snacks. Here are a several ideas: Flavored cream cheese Cream […]

Cream Puffs: Savory or Sweet Party Food
Every time I think of a gathering where appetizers will be served, I can’t help but think of _______salad sandwiches. The ladies of my mom’s social groups served ham, cheese, and chicken salad sandwiches at almost every gathering. They were usually on regular bread (sometimes with the crust cut off) or buns. Why? I have […]

Tasty Roasted Brussels Sprouts
If you wonder why I have not published more recipes for vegetable side dishes, the reason is there is really not much of a recipe usually involved. I usually fix very simply prepared steamed, roasted, and sauteed vegetables. Brussels sprouts are one of those veggies that I usually fix the same way my mom made […]
