Orange Cream Gelatin Dessert is an easy dessert that you can make from a few items in the pantry and freezer at any time of the year. It works well for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mother's Day, bridal or baby showers, etc. It is sweet and rich, yet somehow also seems light and refreshing. It is a rather nostalgic dessert as it reminds me a little of an orange push-up ice cream treat from my childhood. Plus, it is a molded gelatin dessert, which always reminds me of the past. As with other gelatin and fruit dishes, someone might call this a "Jello salad" in the United States. However, this recipe uses an entire quart of orange sherbert in addition to gelatin, so I can not bring myself … Continue Reading about Orange Cream Gelatin Dessert

Lemon Meringue Pie
Perhaps this pie should come with a warning: Beware that eating this pie may result in your not wanting any other lemon meringue pie again. Alright, I may be biased because it is one of the pies my mom made, but there have been other people who ate this pie and later said they other […]

Fried Rabbit
Growing up, I never thought that I would ever buy rabbit meat. Although I loved rabbit (and squirrel) meat, it was hunted – not purchased. Although my father was not a hunter, we often had rabbit and/or squirrel in the freezer given to my parents by one of my mom’s brothers or by someone as […]

Rhubarb “Custard” Pie
Rhubarb seems to often get paired with strawberries. I know that it is in “season” with strawberries, but I really enjoy rhubarb in a more solo form either as a compote or or in my mom’s rhubarb “custard” pie. I must admit that the use of custard in the name of her pie recipe is […]

Easter Cupcake Baskets
Making these easy Easter treats is a great way to get all members of a family involved in a project. I believe the first time I made these was as a kid for our Junior Girl Scout troop to take to a party (I think it was at a nursing home….they are great for kids, […]

Orzo with Mushrooms
The plan was to make mushroom risotto…I had all the ingredients ready to go. However, my family was already asking how much longer until we were going to eat and it was getting late. Thus, I decided to ditch the arborio rice and grabbed the orzo pasta instead. After all, it cooked in half the […]

Sloppy Joe Sandwiches
I am not sure if my tastes changed or the Sloppy Joe sauce in a can changed, but I stopped liking it several years ago. I decided to just make my own from scratch. After making them the first time, I wondered why I ever used the canned stuff. Sloppy Joes are simple to make […]

Mom’s Hot Dog Sauce
When I was in junior high, we raised money for our Girl Scout troop to go to England. One of the thousands of projects we did was sell hot dogs at a booth at our county fair each year. The hot dogs were a hit in part due to the sauce (a.k.a. chili in the […]

Sweet Iced Tea
One of the first things I liked about living in the South was the ability to go into a restaurant and order an “ice tea” and they assumed I wanted it sweet (they would usually ask to just to make sure). My no-sweetener-of-any-kind husband, on the other hand, had to make some adjustments 🙂 One […]

Corned Beef Hash and Hominy
Do you have leftover corned beef? You could use it to make a Ruben casserole or one of my mom’s “go to” meals, corned beef hash and hominy. What made it a “go to” or last minute meal for my mom was that we never had corned beef except out of a can. I am […]

Roasted Cauliflower
My mom was a great cook; however, her boiled cauliflower with butter was not very tasty. She rarely served it with cheese sauce (the only way I could get my husband to agree to eat it for a while) thus, I preferred to eat it raw. I wish my mom had known about roasting cauliflower. […]
