Orange Cream Gelatin Dessert is an easy dessert that you can make from a few items in the pantry and freezer at any time of the year. It works well for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mother's Day, bridal or baby showers, etc. It is sweet and rich, yet somehow also seems light and refreshing. It is a rather nostalgic dessert as it reminds me a little of an orange push-up ice cream treat from my childhood. Plus, it is a molded gelatin dessert, which always reminds me of the past. As with other gelatin and fruit dishes, someone might call this a "Jello salad" in the United States. However, this recipe uses an entire quart of orange sherbert in addition to gelatin, so I can not bring myself … Continue Reading about Orange Cream Gelatin Dessert

Wild Mayhaw Jelly
On my last trip to the orchard, I picked up a small jar of a jelly I had never heard of before, Wild Mayhaw. It is a pretty red jelly. After some research, I found Wild Mayhaw to be a deep southern item. It is related to or a type of Hawthorne (hence the name). […]

Bow Bread Knife: How Did I Ever Live Without You?
I am still working on my bread baking skills. In the meantime, whenever I can swing it, I buy bread from a local bakery. We have several local places that sell the really good Artisan breads. I love fresh bread. It stays fresher if I slice it as we use it than when the bakery […]

Diner, Drive-Ins and Dives: The Book
I love the Food Network program Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I love the concept, the host, and the execution. Most of all though, I love the places they feature. However, I was not sure I would even like a book about the television show. For me, much of the appeal of the show is the […]

Simplify by Cooking Ahead: Chicken
I love chicken, but I also love quick meal preparation as well. I do not love precooked, frozen chicken’s taste or price. I used to love buying rotisserie chickens for the same price as raw. I also loved that they tasted better than what I made at home for cold chicken recipes. I used them for […]

West Virginia’s Pepperoni Rolls
Most of my life, I had no idea that pepperoni rolls were just a West Virginia item. I assumed they were everywhere. Why would they be? They are delicious! In case you are not familiar with them, they are pepperoni (and often cheese) baked inside of a soft yeast bread dough. They do not require […]

Pink Pearls
How cool are these apples? No, there has not been any alterations to the picture. They really are pink inside. I saw them at a local grocery store that emphasizes natural and organic products. I just had to buy some after getting to taste them in the store, and my family really liked them. However, […]

Hippos Are Edible
I almost did not share this discovery. Edible hippos are hard to find in the United States. I was not sure I wanted to compromise an already endangered supply. Yes, I know that the hippos found in the zoo and the jungle are not edible (to the best of my knowledge), the hippos found in […]

The America’s Test Kitchen Family Cookbook
First, let me just say that I do not own this cookbook. I know people who own this cookbook. I have read it extensively. They have it at the library. I really like this cookbook, but I do not own it. Second, this cookbook is one of my favorite general cookbooks along with the Better […]

Muscadines are in Season
Muscadine grapes are just coming in season. If you live outside of the Southeast United States, you may never have had a fresh muscadine. Although they apparently grow in the wild throughout a wider area, they are only grown commercially in the southeastern United States. They thrive in the heat and humidity of the summers and […]

Discontinued Food Products that I Still Miss
I have been reminiscing about the good times of long ago, and I started remembering about some of the great food or related products that I so enjoyed but are no longer available. My maternal grandmother drank Whistle Soda Pop. I loved the fruit flavored pop with the note on the bottle. My paternal grandmother […]
